This is a great time for newcomers interested in learning how to meditate, for experienced meditators looking to develop their practice further, or for any community members looking for a quiet space for meditation.

In the Spotlight: Karma Thegsum Choling

on February 14, 2015 10:48 AM

Name: Karma Thegsum Choling (KTC) of Indiana County

Founded: KTC was formed in 2004 and was incorporated in 2007 as Karma Thegsum Choling of Indiana County.

History: KTC was founded in 2004 as a meditation group in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition by Eleanor Mannikka, a longtime practitioner of Buddhism and former Indiana University of Pennsylvania art professor.

In 2007 the group incorporated to become Karma Thegsum Choling of Indiana County. The group is dedicated to the practice and study of Tibetan Buddhism and offers weekly meditation sessions, free meditation instruction, weekly book discussions, lectures and talks by leading Buddhist scholars and teachers, and other events.

The center houses a full Buddhist shrine featuring traditional Tibetan Buddhist artwork.

The KTC is part of the Kama Kagyu tradition, one of the four main branches of Tibetan Buddhism. Tracing its origin to the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, this tradition is guided by His Holiness, the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje.

KTC is one of 31 centers in North America affiliated with Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, one of the leading monasteries in the United States located in Woodstock, N.Y., and the main seat in the Western Hemisphere of the worldwide head of the Karma Kagyu Order.

KTC is based on the 2,500-year-old traditions of Buddhism, a practice of mental and spiritual development designed to develop compassion and loving kindness for all beings and awaken our own inherent insight into the nature of reality. Spiritual practices focus on alleviating suffering in our community and larger world.

Weekly meditation sessions at KTC include quiet sitting and walking meditation (mindfulness meditation) that calms the mind and provides health benefits and meditations that develop compassion toward oneself and others.

The center also hosts a monthly Chenrezig meditation session which is a chanted meditation specific to Tibetan Buddhism that develops compassion. These sessions are open to people of any faith tradition.

Director: Linda Jennings serves as director of the KTC.
